Curriculum
At Abbey Nursery we follow the Birth to Three framework and Curriculum for Excellence (CfE) in guiding our planning and service delivery and utilise ongoing training to support good practice and interdisciplinary learning.
Ante & Pre School children follow the CfE , as directed by the Scottish Executive which was introduced in 2005 to raise standards of education to meet the challenges of a fast changing, complex world and we are supported in this by the local authority who ensure our teaching reaches their high standards.
"The 3-18 curriculum aims to ensure that all children and young people in Scotland develop the attributes,
knowledge and skills they will need to flourish in life, learning and work" Scottish Executive
There is more detailed information available about the Curriculum on the Learning & Teaching website (ltscotland.org.uk) however we hope the information below gives an outline of how this affects your child during their ante and pre school years at Abbey Nursery.

Four Capacities - the target for all children in the future - to be Successful Learners, Confident individuals, Responsible citizens and Effective Contributors.
Eight Curriculum Areas - areas to be covered across the year - Expressive Arts; Languages & Literacy; Health & Wellbeing; Mathematics & numeracy; Religious & moral education; Sciences; Social STudies; Technologies
Seven Principles - to be incorporated within the planning/activities the children take part in - Challenge & enjoyment; Beadth; Progression; Depth; Personalisation & Choice; Coherence; Relevance.
In essence this 'new' curriculum aims to raise standards; focus on strengthening knowledge & skills; make learning relevant and involve individuals in their own learning. There is a stronger focus on numeracy and literacy skills and also health and wellbeing which are the responsibility of everyone and are to be reflected across all subject areas.
Staff at Abbey have taken part in a lot of training on this new curriculum and are pleased that the emphasis for this age group continues to have a strong focus on 'active learning' and relevance as we all know that children learn better the more interest they have in a topic and the more engaged they are with their learning.
